UMTS/3G Revolution .doc (Abstract)

Abstract

The most powerful invention of the last hundred years which revolutionized the way of living of human beings on the planet earth is the invention of transistor. The immediate application being development in computers and then in the field of communications. Since the advent of mobile communications, there has been an exponential growth in the communication sector. This paper explores the possibility of one such technological development in the field of mobile communication namely “The Third Generation Mobile systems” that is the 3Gsystems. 3G Systems are intended to provide a global mobility with wide range of services including video conferencing, live television, messaging, Internet and broadband data. 3G systems make use of technology called UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunication Systems). UMTS is envisioned as the successor to Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM). The new network increases transmission speed to 2 Mbps per mobile user and establishes a global roaming standard. The major applications of the 3Gsystems coincide exactly with the requirements of the consumer. The most recent example for this is the Test and One day cricket matches which are currently being played in Australia are telecasted live on the mobile for the users ( provided by Orange-3 ).Incidentally more than 85% of the European and Japanese markets underwent an change from 2G to 3G mobiles(report as on 30 November 2005).
