Abstract

VoIP promises to revolutionize the way we make and receive phone calls through the use of internet .Where we can make international calls at local rates .It is a method for sending voice traffic as data over traditional IP-based networks. Voice calls need to have the potential to be carried over a variety of different networks including local networks, PBXs, PSTN and the Internet. It makes use of RTP,H.323 and SIP protocols and different encoding algorithms to compress voice data called codecs. Network Administrators have a tough job providing their users with the security and reliability that they have grown used over the years. But, with proper equipment and network design, there is no reason companies of all sizes can’t make the move to the third generation of the phone system.Companies are beginning to embrace VoIP technology for a variety of reasons. But has VoIP evolved to the point that companies can expect the same reliability and security that they have grown accustomed to with the public switched telephone network (PSTN) that has been the standard for many years. We begin the article by summarizing the evolution of VOIP, its working, applications and conclude by discussing its future developments.
