IP sec ( IP security ) is a suite of protocols for securing Internet Protocol (IP) communications by authenticating and/or encrypting each IP packet in a data stream IP sec also includes protocols for cryptographic key establishment
IP sec protocols operate at the network layer, layer 3 of the OSI model. Other Internet security protocols in widespread use, such as SSL and TLS, operate from the transport layer up (OSI layers 4 - 7). This makes IP sec more flexible, as it can be used for protecting both TCP- and UDP-based protocols, but increases its complexity and processing overhead, as it cannot rely on TCP (OSI layer 4) to manage reliability and fragmentation.
