grid computing .doc -- a new era (Paper Presentation)

Grid computing is a form of distributed computing that involves coordinating and sharing computing, application, data, storage, or network r sources across dynamic and geographically dispersed organizations.

The unused computational power of a PC in a LAN network can be utilized to create an aggregate computational power. Grid computing got its name because it strives for an ideal scenario in which the CPU cycles and storage of millions of systems across a worldwide network function as a flexible, readily accessible pool that could be harnessed by anyone who needs it, similar to the way power companies and their users share the electrical grid.

Grid computing is an alternate solution to obtain the performance of a super computer. Grid offers a competitive advantage for organizations that have computational bottlenecks in critical-path processing.

The grid environment consists of software that enables a network or grid of windows & Linux based systems within an enterprise environment to be turned into a virtual high-performance super computer.

Large application jobs can be split into small, independent computing tasks by grid software. Grid server then distributes the tasks to the clients for concurrent processing. Whenever a client is idle, its processing cycles are applied to such tasks. Results are sent back to the server where they are collected and presented for
